I strongly agree with Lila that students should not be given grades.
Ranking students based on grades and disclosing their grades breed mental illness.
For example, I used to be in a high school where teachers print out the rankings of students’ grades on a piece of paper and hand out to everyone. The result is a violation of privacy. The teachers even verbally abuse those who are left behind.
switch to another school where teachers center on the students individual performance and offer personal
suggestions. My grades have improved a lot and my mental health is better.
This is a quintessential example of how competitive environment is not conducive to better performance.
Jake raised the relevant point that grades can motivate students to study harder, and better prepare them for the workplace, which eliminates weak workers.
However, he does not mention that people are not machines. Subjective well-being is crucial for a person to stay alive. Especially under the current circumstance of involution.
Overall, I am against grading students.
